So you landed the interview- amazing! Now what?
Whether you’re stepping into your first interview in years or feel like you’re constantly almost getting the offer, it’s time to shift from “How do I impress them?” to “How can we connect?” At Promoting Harmony, I help clients prepare for interviews by focusing on presence, purpose, and preparation. Here’s how to walk into that room (or Zoom) with clarity and confidence.
- Know Your Story
The #1 question you’ll always hear?
“Tell me about yourself”
Instead of reciting your resume, use this moment to tell a short story that ties your experience, strengths, and passion to why you’re here now. Think of it as your personal elevator pitch with heart. Practice, but don’t memorize, aim for natural not scripted.
- Research like a Pro
Interviewing is a two-way street. Before you walk in:
- Learn about the company’s mission, culture, and recent news
- Look up your interviewers on LinkedIn (if names are provided)
- Know the job posting inside out
Then, tie your answers to their language and values. Show them you’re already thinking like someone on the team.
- Use the STAR Method for Behavioural Questions
Behavioural questions start with: “Tell me about a time when…”
Use the STAR formula to answer clearly:
Situation
Task
Action
Result
Example: “When I was leading a project with tight deadlines (S/T), I restructured the workflow and delegated based on strengths (A), which helped us finish 3 days early and saved costs ( R ).
- Ask Great Questions
You’re interviewing them too! Good questions show you’ve done your homework and are thinking about long-term fit. Try:
What does success look like in this role after 6 months?
Can you tell me more about the team dynamic?
How does the company support growth and development?
Avoid asking about salary or benefits too early- save those for when an offer’s on the table.
- Stay Grounded Under Pressure
It’s ok to pause, take a breath, and think before answering. Interview nerves are real, but confidence is quiet, present, and calm. Visualize success before the interview, and remind yourself: You’re not trying to prove you are perfect, you’re trying to show you’re a great fit.
